Reminder: Public Information Days for Jan Smuts Drive and Viking Way widening
19 May 2025
Members of the public and interested groups are reminded to attend public information days on the proposal to widen Jan Smuts Drive and Viking Way. The first information day will take place from 16:00 to 19:00 at the Pinelands Town Hall tomorrow, 20 May 2025. Next week Tuesday, 27 May 2025, the public information day will take place at the Thornton Hall from 16:00 to 19:00.
‘The public information days are very important as they give residents the opportunity to raise concerns and provide feedback. The widening of Jan Smuts Drive and Viking Way will ease traffic congestion and assist with traffic flow to keep Cape Town moving. The project forms part of the City’s Travel Demand and Congestion Relief Programme,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The proposed work along Jan Smuts Drive entails:
Widening of Jan Smuts Drive from the N2 freeway to Sunrise Circle
A dual carriageway between the N2 and Viking Way interchange
Intersection optimisation and pedestrian and cycling facilities along the entire route
The proposed work along Viking Way entails:
Widening of Viking Way from Jan Smuts Drive to the interchange with Jakes Gerwel Drive
A dual carriageway between Odin Drive and Sipres Avenue
Upgrade of the adjacent intersections (Odin Drive and Sipres Avenue intersections) to Gunner’s Circle, with provision for walking and cycling infrastructure along the entire route
Jan Smuts and Viking Way are primary arterial routes that connect Pinelands, Thornton and Maitland with the N2 freeway. The project aims to convert both single carriageway portions of the road to dual carriageways that will accommodate all modes of transport and assist with traffic flow.
The Public Information Days are scheduled as follows:
• Pinelands Town Hall: 20 May 2025 from 16:00 to 19:00
• Thornton Hall: 27 May 2025 from 16:00 to 19:00
